High School Project - Eldersburg, MD
Carroll
County Public Schools proposed to build a 154,820
square foot, 900-student high school next to the existing
Linton Springs Elementary School located on Ronsdale
Road, between Linton Road and Klees Mill Road, in
Sykesville, Carroll County Maryland.
Feasibility
Study
A feasibility study was done to ensure that the school
was suited for the site, the areas that were investigated
were grading, SWM, traffic impact and environmental
assessment. The School Board wanted parking for approximately
620 cars, 30 busses and space for 7 ball fields, 8
tennis courts and 4 basketball courts. The site is
67.6 acres.
The amenities fit on the site, however there must be
handicap accessibility to each of the fields. Grading
the site was the biggest factor into what could be
placed throughout the site. The school site would
have three
entrances from Ronsdale Road. We determined the traffic
impact on Ronsdale Road due to the additional entrances
to the school. The environmental impacts were also
considered. What impact would the additional impervious
area have
on the down stream vegetation as well the stream that
intersects the site? The stream would need to be diverted
to make room for all of the ball fields. The existing
SWM facilities, one on site and one at Ronsdale Road,
were to be sized to accommodate capacity for the new
impervious runoff.
Once
the feasibility study was completed, we determined that
the site would indeed be ideal for a high school site.
Design
The proposed 67.6-acre site will include the high school
with 2 baseball fields, a soccer field, a lacrosse
field,
a field hockey field, a multi purpose field, and a
combination football/baseball field. A stadium
with a multi-purpose
field, a running track and stadium seating for 2500
people was placed on the site as well. In addition
to
the fields, 8 tennis courts and 4 basketball courts
were located on the site. A bus loop for 30 busses,
parking
for 622 cars, and a service area were some additional
amenities that were positioned on the site.
The
site is broken into two drainage areas. The first drainage
area discharges into the Ronsdale Road Extension SWM
pond. The second area drains to the on-site SWM pond
that was sized for a future middle and high school to
be constructed on the site. The middle school at this
site has been dropped from the Carroll County Public
School’s expansion plans.
