WBCM provided engineering services for the multi-phased Accelerated Bridge Program rehabilitation of the historic State Street Bridge over the Schuylkill River. The 528-foot six-span concrete spandrel arch structure provides the only access to the town of Hamburg from the west.
WBCM performed an in-depth, hands-on inspection and developed plans for the reconstruction of the deck and floorbeam system. To reconstruct the existing cellular abutments, WBCM designed closure walls at the arch rib interface, removal of the top slab, and in-filling of the abutment cavity with light-weight fill. The 45-degree skew of the substructures required attention when developing the floorbeam and deck details.
WBCM prepared and obtained NPDES and JPA Waterway permit approvals for the design and construction.
Traffic was detoured during construction. Extensive public involvement was required to obtain buy-in from stakeholders and to ensure the closure adequately coordinate emergency response as State Street serves as the detour for incidents on I-78, which parallels the bridge in the project area. Turning lanes and a traffic signal were constructed for the Industrial Drive intersection west of the bridge to accommodate maintenance of traffic.
