OUR SAMPLE PROJECTS
Slope Stabilization
WBCM led a team to investigate and stabilize a 700-foot long section of the cliff situated under Building 75 at the Naval Research Lab’s Chesapeake Bay Detachment. WBCM developed three conceptual designs. NAVFAC opted for the installation of soil nails and flexible facing, which allows vegetation to grow on the cliff face. Additional site work included the redesign of the access roadway to prevent runoff from entering the slope area, design of a closed storm drain system to safely convey all storm flows away from the cliff edge to a stable outfall and major utility relocations to help protect the slope. A 12-foot wide turf-stabilized road was created at the bottom of the slope to allow vehicular access to the site for construction.

Modernization of Building W200
WBCM provided extensive services for the design-build expansion of an administrative facility and parking structure at the Washington Navy Yard. Renovations to Building W200 included the demolition of interior and exterior walls and roofs and the design of a new floor infill area. WBCM provided analysis and design for anti-terrorism/force protection issues such as blast, controlled perimeter, and progressive collapse. The vertical expansion of Garage 405 added a sixth floor and 240 parking spaces to the existing parking garage. New shear walls and pile foundations on the north and south ends of the building were added for stability.

Indian Head P166 Energetics Lab
WBCM provided structural engineering services for the design and construction of the multi-story, 27,600- square-foot Energetics System and Technology Laboratory complex, part of the Naval Surface Warfare Center in Indian Head, MD. The structure is a steel-framed building on a concrete slab on a metal deck system with anti-terrorism/force protection elements integrated into the design.

Russell Road Widening
WBCM provided full engineering, survey, and utility design services for the design-build widening of Russell Road, the main vehicular artery into Marine Corps Base Quantico from points south. The design widened the roadway to a four-lane undivided highway with eight-foot outside shoulders and acceleration/deceleration/left-turn lanes at the entrances. The new alignment fully utilized the existing pavement while minimizing utility relocations, retaining wall construction, and environmental impacts. WBCM developed maintenance of traffic plans to address safety during construction and managed water quality using low-impact designs such as dry swales with check dams and bioretentions.
