OUR SAMPLE PROJECTS
Sagamore Pendry Hotel
WBCM provided a complete package of engineering services for the renovation of the historic Fells Point Recreation Pier, constructed in 1914, into a three-level, 128-room luxury hotel. The hotel uses the historic head house as the lobby and bar area while additional renovations restored the ballroom and grand staircase, rehabilitated the pier, installed a pool overlooking the Inner Harbor, created additional bar and restaurant spaces, and constructed a new boat launch.
The head house required extensive work that included the restoration, replacement, or reconstruction of all brick and stonework and all wooden windows. The grand staircase was restored to its original design by removing a modern infill and the third-floor ballroom was re-plastered and restored to its original grandeur.
WBCM assessed the existing steel framework of the head house for structural integrity and incorporated it into the hotel design where practical. The new second floor of the hotel was placed between the existing first floor and the high bay roof; the existing high bay roof framing was modified and reused to support the hotel’s third floor. The strategic placement of new framed floors and the reuse of existing structural steel was key in meeting the requirements of the Maryland Historic Trust (MHT).

Sagamore Spirit Port Covington Distillery
WBCM provided engineering and associated services for the development of the Sagamore Spirits Distillery campus. The campus is comprised of three buildings, a water tower, a plaza, a grassed beach with terraced seating, and parking. The buildings house the distillery; the visitors center; whiskey cutting, filtering, barreling, bottling, retail, and tasting room; and a restaurant.
WBCM provided design and equipment selection for grain handling, fermentation, cold filtering, cutting, barreling, bottling, the associated structural steel for all equipment supports and access platforms, and the process utility systems.
Site layout includes an interwoven pedestrian path network that evokes the campus concept and facilitates daily tours. Waterfront access was preserved by locating a main pedestrian corridor through the center of the campus.

Murdoch Office Building
WBCM provided engineering services for the construction of a new eight-story, 98,000-square foot office and retail building located at the corner of Forbes Avenue and Coltart Avenue. The lowest parking level is accessible from Iroquois Way at the rear and is fully below grade at the Forbes Avenue side. The first floor is a CVS retail store, and the upper levels are office space with an 8th floor rooftop terrace.
Construction consists of concrete slab on metal deck supported by composite steel framing, steel columns, and deep concrete caisson foundations. The lateral system is comprised of steel braced frames that are highlighted in the curtainwall façade.
The Murdoch Office Building is certified LEED Silver by the USGBC.

DoubleTree Hotel
WBCM provided engineering services for the design and construction of an eight-story guest tower as part of the DoubleTree Hotel and Convention Center. The hotel has 209 guest rooms and 27,000 square-feet of event space, including an amphitheater, conference rooms, an executive board room, and ballrooms.
WBCM was brought in by the project contractor and steel fabricator to provide value engineering services after the initial design proved too costly. WBCM’s redesign of the guest tower reduced steel costs by 10%, keeping it below the $4 million budget.
WBCM coordinated closely with the steel fabricator, contractor, and architect to complete the redesign, provide shop drawings, and facilitate fabrication within four months of notice to proceed. The quick turnaround allowed the project to remain on schedule.

River Vue Apartments
WBCM provided engineering services for the renovation of River Vue, a 16-story building comprised of 218 apartments and two-story townhomes. Renovation of this building was cited by the Wall Street Journal as an example of the renewed livability of Pittsburgh.
WBCM’s provided re-analysis of the structure for overall lateral stability to account for increased wind loading from new screen walls at the roof and the removal of columns from the original structure.
The basement of the building was converted to vehicular parking for tenants.
