WBCM provided building structures engineering services for the selective demolition and renovation of the former Schoen’s Furniture building at 612 West Hamilton Street in Allentown, PA.
WBCM’s investigation discovered that the existing support structure needed substantial improvements to meet building codes. The existing concrete beams were unable to support the proposed vertical load requiring the installation of steel columns at specific locations. New concrete shear walls were added to provide lateral-load carrying capacity in the North-South (long) direction where it was previously provided by brick walls. The brick was removed to allow for a curtain wall feature on the West façade. WBCM’s investigation also noted that much of the old reinforced concrete was deteriorating.
WBCM reviewed the selective demolition of the existing structural elements to avoid structural damage to the building. WBCM also oversaw extensive concrete remediation, providing investigative services and full details and specifications for repairs.
