Navy Medical Biological Defense Research Laboratory, Fort Detrick
Frederick, MD

Navy Medical Biological Defense Research LaboratoryWBCM provided survey, structural engineering, and civil engineering services for the construction of the Navy Medical Biological Defense Research Laboratory (NMBDRL) at Ft. Detrick. The project included the design and construction of 36,600 square foot lab building, a 1,129 square foot guard house, new parking areas, an access roadway, and site and utility improvements.

Civil engineering and surveying services included performing topographic surveys and design for site layout and site grading, which included on-site storm drainage systems, water mains and sanitary sewers, and erosion and sediment control measures.  WBCM coordinated all plans with the requisite jurisdictional agencies for approvals.

WBCM also prepared reforestation and landscape architectural plans and specifications and provided structural engineering services and AT/FP design for the new building.

The facility was designed to achieve LEED Silver status, earning credits in all six LEED categories. The design followed The American Association for Accreditation of Laboratory Animal Care (AAALAC) Guide to Care and Use of Laboratory Research Animals, Guide #8523 and The Animal Welfare Act.

WBCM developed and delivered the NMBDRL using Building Information Modeling (BIM) software. All formal submissions were provided in CAD and BIM formats and hard copy. Site work was developed using Civil 3D and building work was developed using REVIT software. Coordination reviews were performed prior to submission for clash detection.
