WBCM provided engineering services for the 113,665 square foot, six-story University of Maryland, Baltimore Campus Center. The project saw the existing student union building demolished and a new facility constructed. The project was performed in three phases to work around the University’s schedule.
The new facility houses offices, conference rooms, a ballroom, multi-purpose rooms, a natatorium, exercise rooms, a bookstore, food services, and dining spaces. WBCM provided innovative structural design solutions in a constrained site with dense existing underground utilities to accommodate large open areas without columns. The new structure used a concrete slab and composite steel beam system supported by steel columns founded on a mixture of caissons and spread footings. The roof is comprised of steel joists and metal deck.
WBCM also renovated the existing 30 year-old gym on the 10th floor of the adjacent Pratt Street garage. The result was a modern athletic center containing an elevated, roof-supported running track, basketball, volleyball and racquet ball courts, and administrative offices. Renovations also included elevator upgrades, new mechanical equipment, and transitions from the Campus Center to the garage.
